An overcast Sunday in March, which turned out to be a gift: soft, even light on faces, and the warm colours of Piazza di Spagna glowing against a pale sky.

The route
We started at the Trevi Fountain at 9:15 and spent half an hour around the basin and the rocks. From there it is a short walk to the Spanish Steps.
Around Piazza di Spagna we worked the ochre walls and the balustrades below the orange palazzi, then climbed the steps for the view of Trinità dei Monti. Our Spanish Steps guide has the rules and the best times.
Why grey days are good days
Clouds turn the sky into a huge softbox. There are no hard shadows under the eyes, nobody squints, and the ochre and orange walls of Rome look warmer against the grey.
