Trevi Fountain Tickets 2026: Price, Hours and the Best Time to Go

Since 2 February 2026 you need a €2 ticket to go down to the water at the Trevi Fountain. Looking at it from the piazza is still free, and so is the whole fountain early in the morning and late at night. We photograph couples here most weeks, so here is everything we check before a session, in one place.

Do you have to pay to see the Trevi Fountain?

No, only to stand right next to it. The ticket covers the lower area around the basin, the steps where people throw coins. From Piazza di Trevi above you can see and photograph the whole fountain for free at any time.

The city introduced the fee to limit crowding around the basin and to pay for looking after the fountain. Everyone who is not a resident of Rome pays the same €2, with no reduced price.

Trevi Fountain opening hours: when it’s free

The fountain itself never closes. What changes through the day is whether you need a ticket to go down to the water.

  • Before 9:00 (before 11:30 on Mondays and Fridays): free, no ticket needed
  • 9:00 to 22:00: €2 ticket for the area by the water, last entry at 21:00
  • After 22:00: free again, and the fountain is lit

The later start on Mondays and Fridays is because the fountain is cleaned on those mornings.

How to buy Trevi Fountain tickets

The official online shop is fontanaditrevi.vivaticket.it. Tickets bought in advance are open: no date and no time slot, so you can use them whenever you pass by. They cannot be refunded or changed.

On site you can pay by card only. With cash, buy at a Tourist Infopoint or one of the Civic Museums.

Who gets in free

  • Children under 6
  • Residents of Rome and the Rome metropolitan area, with ID
  • Visitors with disabilities, plus one companion
  • Licensed tour guides
  • Holders of a valid Roma MIC card

Rules at the fountain

The rules apply at every hour, paid or free. Inside the area by the water you cannot:

  • eat, drink or smoke
  • throw anything except coins
  • step into the water or wet your clothes

Fines run from €40 to €240, and up to €450 for getting into the water.

The coin tradition

The legend says that one coin, thrown with your right hand over your left shoulder, means you will come back to Rome. Two coins and you will fall in love, three and you will marry.

Around €1.5 million lands in the fountain every year. The city collects it and gives it to Caritas, the Catholic charity that uses it for food and support for people in need in Rome. To throw a coin you need to be down by the water, so between 9:00 and 22:00 that means buying the ticket.

The best time to visit the Trevi Fountain

Early morning. Before 9:00 the area by the water is free and you will share it with a handful of people. By mid-morning there are rows of visitors in front of the basin, and it stays that way until evening.

Late at night. After 22:00 the fee ends and the fountain is lit. It is busier than at dawn, but still calmer than the middle of the day. Our guide to sunrise and sunset times shows when the light goes for each month.

The Trevi Fountain at night

The fountain is floodlit after dark. From 22:00 you can go down to the basin for free. If you want photos without a crowd, though, the first hour after sunrise is still the better choice.

A photoshoot at the Trevi Fountain

Our Trevi sessions start before 9am, so you don’t need a ticket and the fountain is behind you, not a crowd. We plan the route on from there: the Pantheon and Piazza Navona are ten minutes away on foot.
